Chalk, grip spray or towel: what works best for sweaty hands?
All three fight the same enemy: sweat. They work in different ways, and the best choice depends on your sport and where you play.

Whether you lift, climb or swing a racket, sweaty hands cost you grip. The three most common fixes are chalk, a grip spray and the humble towel. Here is how they compare.
1. Chalk (magnesium carbonate)
Gym chalk is a white powder that absorbs moisture and roughens the skin surface slightly, which increases friction.
- Good for: weightlifting, gymnastics, climbing.
- Pros: strong drying effect, cheap.
- Cons: dusty and messy, leaves white marks on clothes, bars and floors. Many gyms restrict loose chalk, and it is rarely welcome on a tennis or padel racket.
2. Grip spray
A grip spray is applied as a fine mist. Formulas with natural rosin, such as ONGrip, leave a thin, invisible layer that adds tack. Rosin is the same resin baseball pitchers and dancers have relied on for decades.
- Good for: tennis, padel, badminton, golf and gym.
- Pros: no dust, quick to apply, works on the hand rather than only drying it, easy to carry in a racket bag.
- Cons: needs a moment to dry, and you reapply when the palm gets slippery again.
3. Towel and wristbands
- Good for: every sport, as a base habit.
- Pros: free, reusable, no residue.
- Cons: only removes sweat you already have. In humid weather the palm is wet again after a few shots, and a soaked towel stops helping.
Side by side
- Adds grip: chalk (yes), grip spray with rosin (yes), towel (no, only dries).
- Mess: chalk (high), grip spray (none), towel (none).
- Allowed in most gyms and clubs: chalk (often limited), grip spray (yes), towel (yes).
- Best for racket sports: grip spray plus towel.
Our recommendation
Combine them. Use a towel to wipe off heavy sweat between points or sets, then a grip spray to restore tack. Keep chalk for heavy lifting sessions where the gym allows it.
And do not forget the equipment: a worn overgrip slips no matter what you put on your hands. Read when to change your overgrip, or why sweaty hands make rackets slip.
Try ONGrip: 60 mL fits in any racket bag or gym bag.
